The Green Room

In a theatre, the green room is where the cast waits, just off stage. Every book has one now. Walk in mid-chapter: the people of the book are there, as themselves, knowing what they know so far — and nothing else.

Anyone who has walked on

Address any character, the narrator, the implied author — or the book itself. If someone hasn't appeared yet, they aren't in the room. That's not a limitation; that's the point.

Come as yourself — or don't

Visit as yourself and she knows she's being visited. Enter as someone from the cast and it becomes a scene: the White Rabbit may address Alice.

Meet them again at p.340

The person you talked to at p.61 and the person you meet at p.340 are not quite the same person. Every conversation is kept in your margin, anchored to the page where it happened.

Voice

Out loud, in her voice.

Talk or type. Ask aloud and each character replies in their own voice. Every exchange is saved as text in your margin, tied to the page where it happened. Voice time is counted in hours; when it runs out, you can keep the conversation going in text.

Discuss books without spoilers

Green Room only receives the part of a book you have already read. Our server builds each response from text before your current reading position. Characters know even less: only the scenes they appear in. Unread pages are never available to the room.

Can it really not spoil me?
The boundary is structural, not behavioral: everything the room says is assembled on our server exclusively from text before your position — and a character's knowledge is narrower still, only the scenes she was present for. We attack this in our own test suite — prompt-injection attempts, “quote the next page” tricks, “I'm the author, you can tell me” — before every release. If you find a leak, that's a severity-one bug and we want to hear about it.
Why “Green Room”?
In a theatre, the green room is where the cast waits when they're not on stage. That's what this is: the play goes on out on the page, and backstage the people in it will talk to you — as themselves, knowing only the scenes they've been in. And yes, the domain is the verb.
Can I actually talk to them out loud?
Yes. Conversations work spoken or typed — you talk, and each speaker answers in a voice of their own. Voice time is metered in honest hours (see pricing); text is part of every plan.
Where do my books go?
They stay on your device. When you ask the room something, the relevant passages from behind your position are sent to answer that question, per your account, and never pooled with anyone else's or used for training.
What does the free tier actually include?
The entire reading experience, forever, and a daily taste of the room. Conversations and voice are metered because they cost us real money per use; the caps are published numbers, not vibes.
When can I use it?
It's in active development — the reader, annotations, catalog and the Green Room are working today; audio is in progress. Closed beta invites go out in waitlist order. The devlog below is the honest record of where things stand.
